Brazilian naval strength in 1830 according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 20 October 1831

An item reported that the Brazilian navy at the end of 1830 consisted of 2 ships of the line, 10 frigates, 10 corvettes, 12 brigs, 10 schooners, 4 smaller vessels and 2 steamships and further more some transports and gunboats. Most of the ships were in worse condition, decommissioned and disarmed. The necessary sailors consisted of volunteers or pressed men. In fact were usually sailors engaged when suddenly one of the warships was commissioned. The budget for 1832 was 1.985.461 Rs.
