Movements of the Dutch warships Zr. Ms. Prins Hendrik der Nederlanden, Sumatra and Suriname at Den Helder, Netherlands Middelburgsche Courant dated 27 August 1850

An item dated Den Helder, Netherlands 21st reported the departure at 06.00 o’clock of the Dutch frigate Zr.Ms. Prins Hendrik der Nederlanden captain jonkheer van Karnbeek from the harbour to the roads.(1) Her rigging was praised as beautiful. In the afternoon arrived the corvette Zr.Ms. Sumatra (2) captain lieutenant ‘t Hooft. Both ships were built conform the British Symons design. The same day also arrived the steamship Zr.Ms. Surinam (3) lieutenant 1st class G. Fabius coming from Hellevetsluis, Netherlands.

1. Frigate 2nd class, laid down by J. Vos at the navy yard at Amsterdam, Netherlands on 3 September 1844, launched on 2 December 1847, renamed as floating battery Pollux in 1859, displacement 1.861 tons, dimensions 48 (load line) x 14,4 (inner hull) x 5,7 (fore)-6,2 (aft) x 6,6 (hold below upper deck ) metres and an armament of 38 (4-20”grenade guns, 20 long 30pd guns, 12-medium 30pd guns and 2 long 30 pd guns)-44 guns. Docked as the Pollux on 30 August 1859, undocked on 20 September 1859 and finally broken up.
2. Sumatra also called Sumatraan, kuilcorvette, on stocks at the navy yard at Rotterdam, Netherlands by C.J. Glavimans on 26 October 1843, launched on 18 May 1848, transferred to the navy yard at Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands on 28 August, there docked and coppered 9-23 October, commissioned on 1 May 1849, burned off Kema, Celebes on 16 May 1854, displacement 942 tons and as dimensions 39,5 (waterline) x 12,00 (inner hull) 12,30 x 5,00 (fore)-5,40 (aft) and a hold of 6,2 metres and an armament of 26 guns.

Paddle steamship 4th class, call sign GQVP, on stocks at the shipyard of the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij Fijenenoord, Rotterdam, Netherlands on 15 April 1845, launched in December 1845, used for towing Dutch ships loaded with grain returning from Elsinore, Denmark in 1847, visited the Dutch West Indies/Surinam in 1847, served in the Dutch East Indies since 1851, stricken in 1875, iron-built hull and wood upper decks, dimensions 40,4 (between perpendiculars on load line) x 7,4 x 2,3 (fore)-2,7 (aft) x 4,56 (hold) metres, an armament of 6 guns and horsepower of 110 hp.
