French hospital ship Amazone lost most of her medical personal in the Mexican waters according to the Dutch newspaper Dagblad van Zuid-Holland en ‘s-Gravenhage dated 21 October 1862

An item dated Paris, France 19th reported that all sick men on board of the French hospital ship Amazone which returned from Mexico were disembarked.(1)  Since then was the complete ship scrubbed and cleaned with smoke. A journalist spoke one of the doctors on board and it became clear that life on board of the ships in the French squadron off Mexico had been a hell harassed as they were by diseases. The Forfait lost half of her crew including captain Vedel and lieutenant Lannes. Of the hundred men belonging to the 99th regiment of line at Vera Cruz were just 10 alive when the Amazone departed. On board of the Amazone died 16 of the 18 doctors!
