German armoured cruiser SMS German Blücher 1907-1915


Laid down with the provisional name É’at the Kaiserliche Werft, Kiel, Germany on 21 February 1907, launched on 11 April 1908, commissioned on 1 October 1909, training ship for naval gunners since 1911 and sunk during the battle of Dogger Bank against the British fleet on 24 January 1915. Although larger and heavier armed as the German armoured cruisers before her, she was in fact a mistake. Designed to compete the British Invincible-class battle cruisers became clear that this was a disastrous fata morgana while the British ships with 8-30,5cm/12“ guns were much heavier armed.

Displacement 15.842 tons/15.592 (long tons (design)-17.500 tons/17.200 long tons (full loaded) and as dimensions 161,8 x 24,5 x 8,84 metres or 520.10 x 80.5 x 29.0 feet. Horsepower 31.562 ihp/23.536kW delivered by -4cylinder vertical triple expansion engines and 18 maritime type boilers via 3 screws allowing a speed of 25,4 knots and with a range of 6.600 nautical miles with a speed of 12 knots and 3.350 nautical miles with 18 knots. The crew numbered 853-1.026 (during her last battle).
The armament consisted of 6x2-21cm/8” SK L/45 guns, 8-15cm/5.9” SK L/45 guns (4 at each side in barbettes, 16-8.8cm/3.46” SK L/45 guns and 4-45cm/17.7” torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 6-18cm/2.4-7” thick belt while the battery, barbettes, gun turrets and conning tower were protected by respectively 14cm/5.5”, 18cm/7”, 6-18cm/2,4-7” and 8-25cm/3.1-9.8”.
