Japanese ambitious shipbuilding program according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1936 no. 6

An item referred to the Jap. Crt. dated 6 August 1936 reported that for the Japanese fleet at that moment 25 ships with a total tonnage of 72.000 ton were being built and that on short notice with the building of another 5 ships with a total tonnage of 20.000 ton would be started. If the new building program was realized numbered the Japanese fleet totally 183 ships with a total tonnage of 780.000 ton, with other words around 64% of the strength of the British and American fleets.
