Austria intended to modernize the Erzherzog Karl-class battleships according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1911-1912 no. 3


An item referred to the magazine Le Yacht which reported that the 3-10.600 ton battleships of the Erzherzog Karl-design were to be completely rebuilt.(1) The 4-24cm guns and a part of the 19cm guns were to be removed and replaced by 30,5cm guns in new turrets. Costs for each ship was estimated to be at least 2.500.0000 (Dutch guilders?) and the conversion took at least one year. A later tidings reported that the conversion was cancelled.

1. Built and commissioned between 1902 and 1907 and consisting of the Erzherzog Karl, Erzherzog Ferdinand Max and Erzherzog Fredrich, succeeded by the Habsburg-class and succeeded by the Radetzky-class.
