Laid down with the provision name ‘B’ at the Kaiserliche Werft at Kiel, Germany with yard number 27 in April 1900, launched on 22 June 1901, baptized by Princess Irere of Prussia, completed on 12 January 1904, commissioned on 12 January 1904, seat trials completed on 30 May 1904, used as gunnery training ship, survived a torpedo hit by a British submarine in July 1915, repairs completed in September 1915, but torpedoed by the British submarine HMS E8 and sunk when ammunition magazines exploded with the loss of 672 men around 20 miles west of Libau on 23 October 1915. Building costs 16.371.000 German Goldmarks. Of the Prinz Adalbert-class consisting of the Prinz Adalbert and Friedrich Carl. Preceded by the Prinz Heinrich and succeeded by the Roon-class.

General technical specifications of this class. Displacement 9.087 (normal)-9.875 (full load) tons and as dimensions 124,9 (waterline)-126,59 (over all) x 19,61 x 7,8 metres or 410-415.33 x 64.33 x 25.5 feet. Hull was built up from transverse and longitudinal steel made frames connect with the hull plates by riveting. Divided in 14 watertight compartments and with a double bottom over 60% of the hull length. Fitted out with 3-3 cylinder vertical triple expansion steam engines and 14 Dürr boilers. Horsepower 16.200 ihp (design), a speed of 20 knots and with a coal bunker capacity of 750 (design)-1.630 (maximum) and a speed of 12 knots a range of 5.080 nautical miles. The armament consisted of 2x2-21cm/8.3” L/40 quick firing guns, 10-15cm/5.9” L/40 quick firing guns, 12-8,8cm l/35 quick firing guns and 4-45cm/18” torpedo tubes (bow, stern, broadsides). The armour was Krupp steel made consisting of a belt with a thickness of 8cm/4.1” (end)-10cm/3.9” (centre) backed by 5cm/2.0” thick teak, 4-8cm thick armoured deck, main gun turrets protected by 3 (roofs)-15cm/5.9” (sides), forward conning tower by 3cm/1.2” (roofs)-15cm/5.9” (sides), aft conning tower 2cm/0.79” and casemated guns and secondary armament by 15cm.
