Former Spanish warships General Alava, Quirros and Villalobos commissioned in US Navy according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens 1900 no. 5

An item reported that the former Spanish Alava (steam transport) and the gunboats Quiros and Villalobos were recently bought and commissioned in the US Navy. It were modern ships to serve in the waters around the Philippines. The gunboats were composite single screw steamships with a displacement of 347 tons and as dimensions 44,4 x 6,9 metres. Horsepower 500 ehp and a speed of 12 knots. The armament was also bought and consisted for each ship of 2-5,7cm quick firing guns and 2-5 barrels Nordenfelt machineguns. The General Alava was in 1895 built at Dumbarton, Scotland as a single screw steel made steamship with a displacement of 532 tons and dimensions 64,6 x 9 x 5,6 metres. Used as troop transport in shallow waters.
