Norway ordered building coastal defence ships by British firm Armstrong according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens 1896 nr. 3
An item reported that the Norwegian navy was negotiating with the British firm Messrs. Armstrong at Elswick over building warships, costs including armament and fitting out 220.000 pond sterling. The contract for two armoured ships was already signed. (1)Although smaller as earlier intended were the turrets and the machinery stronger. The armament was to consist of 2x1-21cm guns in armoured barbettes, 4-12cm quick firing guns and several quick firing guns of smaller calibre.
Note
1. Presumably the Tordenskjold-class consisting of the Tordenskjold and the Harald Haarfrage, ordered in 1896.
