American battle fleet welcoming American steamship USS George Washington off French coast according to the Dutch newspaper Limburgsch dagblad dated 13 December 1918

An item dated London, England 12th reported that an American battle fleet consisting of the USS Wyoming flagship of admiral Sims (2), 2 divisions of battleships and a division destroyers left Portland to welcome the George Washingon (1) the next day off Brest, France.

1. William Sowden Sims (Port Hope, Ontario, Canada 15 October 1858-25 September 1925 Boston, Massachusetts), served in the US Navy 1880-1922, commanded in the First World War the Nus Navy forces active in the European waters out of the United Kingdom.
2. The steamship George Washington was launched at the AG Vulcan Stettin, Stettin, Germany with yard number 286 on 10 November 1908 built for the German shipping North German Lloyd at Bremen, Germany. In 1914 interned in the USA and seized in April 1917 when the USA participated in the First World War/ Commissioned as the troop transport USS Georg Washington (ID=3018), decommissioned in 1920 although she was recommissioned as the USS Catlin in the US Navy, then used by England and the US Army until 1947 and finally sold to be broken up in February 1951.
