Dutch screw steamship 1st class Tromp destined towards South America- according to the Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 12 November 1883

An item reported that the steamship Zr.Ms. Tromp (2) was to depart Nieuwediep, Netherlands on short term for a voyage towards South-America. Underway were to be visit St. Vincent (Cape Verde), Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, the Falklands, Cape of Good Hoop, Congo-river, Ascension and then Surinam, Curacao and some islands in the West-Indies probably Barbados and Cuba. The latter part of the voyage was still uncertain while she was expected around July in the Netherlands. The etat-major consisted of the commanding officer, 8 officer and 15-16 midshipmen. The Tromp was compared with the Leeuwarden which was ready to depart towards the Dutch East Indies. The Leeuwarden was a far better sailing ship, but the Tromp had more horsepower.(2)

Screw steamship 1st class, call sign GQWN, laid down at the navy yard at Amsterdam, Netherlands on 23 August 1875, launched on 12 December 1877, commissioned on 30 May 1879, decommissioned on 5 June 1902, stricken in 1904 and sold to be broken up on 19 August 1904. Iron-built and wood-planked. Sail area 1.709 square metres. Machinery built by the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij, Rotterdam, Netherlands. Displacement 3.566 ton and as dimensions 80,00 (between perpendiculars)-91,85 (over all) x 12,50 x 6,53 metres. One direct driven expansion steam engine delivering 2.329 ihp via one screw allowing under steam a speed of 13,7 knots. Her crew numbered 300 men. The original armament consisted of 6-16cm A no. 1 guns, 8-12cm K.A. no. 1 guns, 6-3,7cm revolver guns (later increased with 8-3,7cm guns and spar torpedoes (later removed). The 17cm guns were removed in 1901 to be used for a battery at Sabang, Dutch East Indies.

Screw steamship 1st class, call sign GQMN, on stocks at the navy yard at Vlissingen, Netherlands, Netherlands on 6 December 1859, launched on Saturday 13.30 o’clock 19 October 1861, condemned  1886, decommissioned on 20 September 1885 and sold at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies for ƒ 26.050 on 23 January 1886, dimensions 58,00-62,84 (over all) x 12,25 x 5,50 metres, 2.030 tons displacement, an armament of 10 guns (10 rifled 16cm guns, 1881: 6-12cm guns, 4 rifled 16cm guns), a crew numbering 212-225 men, 8,5 knots speed and 250 hp horsepower.
