An item reported that the Italian sanitary service of the navy performed very well during the last war.(1) There had been two hospital ships (former emigrant steamships) available which were already in peacetime prepared for such purposes and each able to treat around 800 wounded or sick men. In just six days were they completely fitted out including the radiographic and bacteriological equipment. During a period of 13 months were 23.000 sick and wounded men brought back to Italy supporting the Italian army abroad and when the troops were embarked at Bengasi was even a field lazeretto established.

Note
1. War between 29 September 1911-18 October 1912 which was disastrous for Turkey and resulting in establishing Italian Libya  and gaining control over the Greek Dodecanese islands.
