Tunisians allowed to service in French navy according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1914 nos. 1-2
An item reported that
the French minister of navy decided that Tunisians were allowed to serve within
the French marine although under some conditions. Their age was to be between
18-30 year, of good physical condition, able to speak and write French and
never be condemned for seriously prison sentences. Engagement was obliged for
3-5 years. During the first 3 years of their service were the Tunisians native
wages paid and then treated just like French born personnel while they became
French citizens.
