An item dated Tokyo, Japan 20th reported that as a result of the Washington Naval Treaty (1) the Japanese cabinet decommissioned nine battleships. (2)

1. Result of the Washington Naval Conference between November 1921-February 1922 signed by USA, England, Japan, Italy and France to limit the building of battleships, battle cruisers and aircraft carriers and to limit the possession of such capital ships by stopping completion of breaking up already existing.
2. Japanese capital ships broken up or canceleld under the treaty were the Satsuma-class consisting of the Satsuma and Aki built between 1905-1911, the Iwami (the former Russian Oryol of 1899-1902), the Hizen (former Russian Retvizan of 1899-1902), the Suwo (ex-Russian Pobeda of 1899-1902), Tosa 1920-1921 but not completed and the Katori-class consisting of the Katori and Kashima built between 1904-1906. The building of the four 42.600 ton Kii-class battleships was cancelled. The four 47.500 tons Number 13-class battleships were even suspended before actual building was started. Of the Amagi-class battlecruisers were two cancelled, one broken up with the Akagi converted into an aircraft carrier.
