Greek armoured cruiser Georgios Averof bombarded Samsoen according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 10 June 1922


An item dated Constantinople, Turkey 9th reported that Samsoen was bombarded by the Greek cruiser Averof. The Averof informed the governor of Samsoen via the commanding officer of an American torpedo boat that within one hour he intended to destroy the arms- and ammunition magazine. Within 44 minutes begun the bombardment causing heavily damages.(1)

Of the Italian Pisa-class. Ordered 1909, laid down at the Orlando Shipyards at Livorno, Italy 27 February 1910, launched 12 March 1910, commissioned 1 September 1911 and decommissioned 1 August 1952. She was originally intended for the Italian navy.
