Spanish warships Pelayo, Vitoria and Numancia modernized in Franceaccording to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1897-1898 No. 6

Numancia

An item referred to the magazine le Yacht reporting that at the French shipyards of De la Seyne the Spanish ships Pelayo (1), Vitoria (2) and Numancia (3) were complete modernized. The Pelayo was to be fitted out with Niclausse boilers which caused a weight reduce of around 250 tons improving her offensive and defence performance. The old guns were to be replaced by quick firing guns with an extended ammunition storage and fitting out with cofferdams and am armoured redoubt.

1. Barbette ironclad. Laid down at la Seyne, France in April 1885, launched on 5 February 1887, completed in the summer of 1888, disarmed in 1923 and broken up in 1925.
2. Armoured frigate, laid down by Thames Ironworks, Blackwall, London, England in January 1863, launched on 4 November 1864, completed in May 1867, commissioned in 1868 and stricken and broken up in 1912.
3. Armoured frigate, laid down at the Forgeset Chantiers de la Méditerranée, La Seyne, France on 22 April 1862, launched on 19 November 1863, completed on 17 December 1864, commissioned in 1865, refitted in 1897-1898, stricken in 1912 and grounded off Sesimbra, Portugal while underway to be broken up under tow on 17 December 1916. Partly broken up en situ.
