Argentinean coastal defence ship Independencia 1890-1969


Building ordered in 1889, laid down at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, England on 15 March 1890, launched on 26 February 1891, completed on 5 March 1892, commissioned on 1889, reclassified as coast guard ship in 1915, used for survey tasks in 1917-1919, training ship 1921-1922, laid up in 1923-1926, converted from coal into petrol fuelling, decommissioned in naval service in December 1946, submarine tender 1946-1948, handed over to the cost guard in 1949, pilot station ship in the Rio de la Plata until she was decommissioned in 1968 and sold to be broken up in 1969.

With a steel hull especially for de coastal defence with a steel made hull compartmented by six bulkheads. Sister ship of the Libertad. Displacement 2.336 tons and as dimensions 73,15 x 13,55 x 3,96 metres or 240.0 x 44.5 x 13.0 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 vertical compound steam engines and 4 boilers supplying 3.000 ihp allowing a speed of 11 knots. With a maximum coal bunker capacity of 340 tons and a speed of 10 knots was her range 3.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 160 men. The armour consisted of 1 5cm/2.0” thick deck, a 20cm/7.9” thick belt with the main gun protected by 12,5cm/4.9“ thick shields and the barbettes and conning tower by respectively 20cm/7.9” and 10cm/3.9”. The armament consisted of 2-24cm/9” Krupp guns, 4-12cm/4.7” Elswick guns, 4-4,7cm/1.9” Nordenfelt quick firing guns, 4-45,7cm/ 18” Whitehead torpedo tubes and a ram.
