British escort vessel HMS Bittern was the first real escorteur according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 no. 6

An item referred to the magazine U.S.R. dated 8 July 1937 reporting that the recently launched Bittern was the 3rd of a new class convoy escort vessels. But in fact she was the first one really fitted out as escorteur. The Enchantress was converted into an admiralty yacht and the Stork into a survey vessel.
