An item referred to the Proceedings dated July 1937 reporting that general Weygand (1) insisted on founding by France of a large naval base along the Syrian coast. Just like for the United Kingdom was the control over the eastern part of the Mediterranean of the utmost importance for the connection with the French Indies possessions. While Italy now strengthening her position on the Dodekanesos islands [nowadays part of Greece) in the Aegean Sea and the United Kingdom on Cyprus could France not stay behind.
