Japanese heavy cruiser Mogami harassed by technical problems according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 no. 6

An item referred to the Proceedings dated July 1937 reporting that the building of the Japanese cruiser Mogami (commissioned in September 1930) needed 4 years caused by problems occurred during the first trials. Her dimensions of 630 x 60 x 18 feet were characteristic for the Japanese shipbuilding: extremely long and wide and with just a small draught.(1)

Note
1. She built under the 1931 Fiscal year (Maru-1Naval Armaments Supplement Programme), laid down at the Kire Naval Arsenal, Japan on 27 October 1931, launched on 14 March 1934, commissioned on 28 July 1935 and scuttled after the Battle of the Sungao Strait on 25 October 1944. Displacement 8.500 (design)-13.670 (actual) tons and as dimensions 197 (design)-198 (actual) x 18 (design)-20,2 (actual) x 5,5 (design)-5,89 actual) metres. Her trials were indeed harassed by problems caused by yet not tested equipment, lacking quality of welding and in heavy weather conditions being top-heavy was the stability not sufficient. The result was a complete rebuilding ending in a top cruiser design.
