American heavy cruiser USS Augusta escorted by destroyers visiting the Dutch East Indies in 1936

Northampton-class heavy cruisers

An item reported that the American heavy cruiser USS Augusta (1) with the destroyers Paul Jones (2), Pope (3), Peary (4), Pillsbury (5) and J.D. Ford (6) visited the Dutch East Indies harbour Batavia between 25 November-2 December 1936.

1. Part of the Northampton-class heavy cruisers consisting of the Northampton, Chicago, Houston, Augusta, Louisville and Chester, preceded by the Pensacola-class and succeeded by the Portland-class. Building ordered on 18 December 1924, building awarded on 13 June 1927, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 2 July 1928, launched by Miss Evelyn McDaniel on 1 February 1930, commissioned on 30 January 1931, reclassified from CL-31 into CA-31 on 1 July 1931, stricken on 1 March 1959 and sold to Robert Benjamin, Panama City, Florida, USA be broken up on 9 November 1959. She was however not earlier removed from the custody of the US Navy as by 2 March 1960.
2. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia on 23 December 1919, launched on 30 September 1920, commissioned on 19 April 1921, decommissioned on 5 November 1945, stricken on 28 November 1945 and sold to be broken up on 5 October 1947. Clemson-class. DD-230.
3. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia on 23 December 1919, launched on 9 September 1919, launched on 23 March 1920, commissioned on 27 October 1920, sunk during a Japanese air attack between Java and Borneo, Dutch East Indies on 1 March 1942 and stricken on 8 May 1942. Clemson-class DD-225.
4. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia on 23 December 1919, launched on 9 September 1919, launched on 6 April 1920, commissioned on 22 October 1920, sunk during a Japanese air attack on Darwin, Australia and stricken on 8 May 1942. Clemson-class DD-226.
5. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia on 23 December 1919, launched on 23 October 1919, launched on 3 August 1920, commissioned on 15 December 1920 and sunk by the Japanese cruiser Takao and Atago near Java, Dutch East Indies. Clemson-class DD-227.
6. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia on 23 December 1919, launched on 11 November 1919, launched on 2 September 1920, commissioned on 30 December 1920, decommissioned on 2 November 1945, stricken on 16 November 1945 and sold to be broken up on 5 October 1947. Clemson-class DD-228.
