French citizens of Brest afraid for British squadron cruising along the coast according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Tilburgsche Courant dated 23 October 1898

An item referred to a telegram received from Brest, France dated 20th reporting that at Brest the population panicked while the British Channel Fleet was cruising along the French coast and now off Ouessant. Recently was at Plymouth, England for 6 months victuals loaded. It consisted of the largest battleships the British Royal Navy possessed, namely the 15.000 tons Hannibal, Jupiter, Magnificent, Majestic, Mars, Prince, Prince George, Repulse and Resolution. The fleet numbered furthermore the large cruisers Blake and Diadem, 3-2nd class cruisers and 8 smaller vessels.
