Large number of casualties caused by gunpowder explosion on board of Japanese battleship Kashima according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 18 September 1907

An item dated Tokyo, Japan 17th reported that due to an explosion on board of the Japanese battleship Kashima 5 officers and 22 men were killed, 2 officers and 6 men seriously and 2 officers and 6 men lightly wounded. It was not a shell which exploded but the gunpowder catches fire due to the gushing heated gases when the gun was reloaded. The ship was externally not damaged.(1)
