An item reported that the Persian navy until recently consisted of just a few old gunboats. In 1932 were 2-950 ton gunboats and 4-330 ton patrol vessels added, which were built in Italy where also their crews were trained. Rumours claimed that Italian trainers were active in Persia.(1)

1.Three gunboats arrived in November 1932 at Khorranshahr and disassembled transported over land to Bandar Pahlavi where the boats with were assembled again with Italian support. Commissioned a year later were the Sefidrud, Gorgan and Babolsar. The 970 ton gunboats or sloops were the Babr, laid down by CNR Palermo, Italy in 1930, launched on 2 August 1931, completed in 1932 and sunk by the Australian sloop Yara at Khoraaamshahr on 25 August 1941, she was salvaged but broke lose while tow and was wrecked in the Karun river with as sister ship Palang, laid down by CNR Palermo, Italy in 1930, launched in November 1931, completed in 1932 and sunk in the harbour of Abadan by the British sloop HMS Shoreham on 25 August 1941 and afterwards broken up.
