An item referred to the U.S.R. dated 21 April 1938 pointing out the importance of the United Kingdom of a friendly relation with Portugal. The Portuguese owned islands Madeira, St. Vincent and Cape Verde were of huge strategically importance for protecting the South Atlantic shipping route and the British merchant trade with Argentina.
