American transport USS Wakefield (AP-21) damaged by fire according to the German Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden dated 10 September 1942

An item referred to a statement of the US Navy Department reporting that the former passenger steamship Manhattan now serving as the USA transport Wakefield while being at sea was heavily damaged by fire.(1)

Laid down as the ocean liner ss Manhattan by New York Shipbuilding for account of the United States Line on 6 December 1930, launched on 5 December 1931, purchased by the US Navy on 6 June 1941, fire broken out on 3 September 1942, repaired between 1942-1943, decommissioned on 10 February 1944, decommissioned and laid up on 16 June 1946, stricken in 1959 and sold to be broken up in 1964.
