American minelayer USS Oglala surveying the Aleutian islands according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1935 no. 4

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated April 1935 reported that in the summer the 4.200 tons minelayer USS Oglala (1) supported by 6 minesweepers would continue with surveying the Aleutian Islands.

1. Laid down as the coastal passenger ship Massachusetts for account of the Maine Steamship Company by William Cramp and Sons Ship&Engineering Building Company, Philadelphia, USA in 1907. Converted from coal into fuel oil firing, sold to the US Navy on 31 October/2 November 1917, renamed Shawmut and converted into a minelayer at the Boston Navy Yard, commissioned on 7 December 1917, renamed Oglala on 1 January 1928, flagship of the 1934 Aleutian Islands Survey Expedition,  internal combustion engine repair ship since 21 May 1943, stricken on 12 July 1946, handed over first to the Maritime Commission and later to the War Shipping Administration before she was sold to be broken up on 2 November 1965.
