American ammunition transport USS Nitro bound for Wake Island according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1935 no. 4

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated April 1935 reported that the American ammunition transport Nitro with a seaplane on board departed towards Wake Island for prepare the founding of an aircraft base on the island.

1. Pyro-class. Laid down by Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington, USA on 19 March 1919, launched on 16 December 1919, commissioned on 1 April 1921, decommissioned on 30 November 1945 and sol to be broken up on 19 September 1949.

In May 1935 was started with creating a flying boat base for the Pan American Airways. In October 1936 started this company with a passengers line across the Pacific using Martin M-130 Flying Clipper flyboats. In January 1941 begun the US Navy with constructing of a military base.
