British battleship HMS Rodney instead of the Nelson flagship of the Home Fleet according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 17 January 1934


An item dated London, England 17h reported that the supreme commander of the British Home Fleet admiral Sir William Boyle chose for the battleship Rodney (1) lying near Cawsand as his new flagship instead of the Nelson still (2) lying at Portsmouth, England. The Rodney left on yesterday evening towards Arosa, Spain to join there other British warships with as destination the West Indies.

1. Of the Nelson-class consisting of the Rodney and Nelson, preceded by the never realized N3-class and the realized Revenge-class and succeeded by the King George V-class. A simplified design of the N3 battleships which was cancelled by the British Royal Navy as a result of the Washing Naval Treaty of 1922. They were to able to compete with the USS Colorado and the Japanese Nagato battleship classes.
