Brazilian floating dry dock Affonse Penna needed to be enlarged according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1913 No. 7

An item reported that the floating dry dock Affonse Penna which was built by the British firm Vickers 3 years earlier for Brazil was now stationed in the entrance canal between Governardor Island and Boqueira Island. It had a capacity for ships of maximum 22.000 tons and was large enough for the Sao Paulo-class and the Minas Gereas-class (19.280 tons. The Rio de Janeiro-class however was with 193 metres and a displacement of 27.500 tons too large. To compensate this was decided to enlarge the dock with a section. The result was that the original length was increased from 167 to 218 meters with a new lifting capacity of 30.000 tons. Vickers would be responsible for the rebuilding.
