Marine traffic on the Danube river according to a CIA report dated 24 October 1950

An item reported that up to May 1950 totally 26 pilots were active on the Danube, since then left 8 pilots dismissed as being ‘alien’. Soviet ships were the only ones allowed to travel by night and were furthermore not escorted by the Rumanian River Police as not Soviet ships were. Foreign loaded cargo ships had always Romanian custom officials on board. Hungary handed 8 of the vessels over to the Soviet Union as part of war reparations.
