Regulations for cleaning holds of Soviet tankers and barges according to a CIA report dated 3 January 1953

An item reported that the regulations dealing with the cleaning of the holds of the Soviet barges and tankers active in the Volga-Kaspian Regio were not changed. The process consisted of draining the hold with pumps, than filling the hold with hold water followed by using steam to clear away the remaining residues and then sending groups of woman ‘armed’ with rags into the holds for the final stage of cleaning. Mechanizing the process seemed not ot be considered.
