Japanese training ships Hiei and Kongo visited the Dutch East Indies in March 1900

An item reported that the Japanese training ships Sti-Yeu (1)and Kongo (2) visited Ambon, Moluccas, Dutch East Indies on 27 March 1900.(3)

Notes
1. This must be the ironclad corvette Hiei of the Kongo-class, ordered on 24 September 1875, laid down by Milford Haven Shipbuilding&Engineering Co., Pembroke Dock, Wales, United Kingdom on 24 September 1875?. Launched on 11 June 1877, completed in February 1878, training ship since 1887, reclassified as 3rd class coastal defence ship on 21 March 1898, as survey ship in 1906, stricken on 1 April 1911 and sold to be broken up befor 25 March 1912.
2. Ironclad-corvette ordered on 24 September 1875, laid down by Earle’s Shipbuilding&Engineering Co., Hull, England on 24 September 1875?, launched on 17 April 1877, completed in January 1878, reclassified as training ship in 1887, reclassified a 3rd class coastal defence ship on 21 March 1898, survey ship since 1906, stricken on 20 July 1909 and sold to be broken up 20 May 1910.
3. The Dutch newspaper Soerabaijasch handelblad dated 12 April 1900 reported the arrival in the early morning of the Hi Yei captain H. Tanji and Kongo captain K. Imai accompanied by Hr. M. Java. The Japanese ships coming from Manila, Philippines anchored for loading fresh water and departed two days later to Thursday Island. The officers hardly spoke English and the sailors just Japanese.
