Tomb church Eglise Saint-Eloi in Dunkirk

Born as Jan Bart (Flemish selling of his name). His French naval career was between 1672 and 1698. Perhaps the most famous French privateer who also served in the navy of the Dutch Republic under the Dutch admiral Michiel Adriaansz de Ruyter. In 1672 when war broke out between the Allies and the Dutch Republic he entered the French navy. He became the terror on sea for the Dutch Republic until the end of his career. Buried in the church Eglise Saint-Eloi in Dunkirk.
