Portuguese ironclad Vasco da Gama visited Ambon, Dutch East Indies in 1910


An item reported that the Portuguese cruiser Vasco da Gama (1) visited Ambon between 25-28 September 1910. In October she was involved in a nearly conflict between the Netherlands and Portugal.(2)

1. Laid down by Thames Iron Works and Shipbuilding Company, Blackwall, London, England in 1875, launched on 1 December 1876, completed in 1878, reconstructed by Orlando, Livorno, Italy in 1901, crew mutinied partly in 1913 and fully in 1915, disarmed in 1933 and sold to be broken up in 1935.
2. The Constitutional Kingdom of Portugal was replaced by the First Portuguese Republic after the revolt of 5 October 1910. As a result of chancing of changing her flag she was ordered by the Dutch East Indies government to leave the harbour of Tandjong Priok within 4 days. The Dutch protected cruiser Hr.Ms. Noord-Brabant was ordered to leave Surabaya, Dutch East Indies as soon as possible and Dutch infantry was kept available in the barracks.
