The Russian 800 twin screw diesel Lake tug according to a CIA report dating from the 1950s

An item referred to the publication Susa Novykh Tipoc dlya Bol’shoy Volgi, written by A.P. Strakhov, Moscow 1954 dealing with new kind of ships to serve on the Volga. The river channel would in the future be changed caused by constructing of hydroelectric power projects and corresponding attendant reservoirs. So in this manner were new types of river ships needed including several types of screw steam and diesel tugs. The new tugs were be stronger and their propulsion more economical despite it were vertical steam engines or internal combustion diesel engines.

One type was the 800hp twin screw diesel Lake tug with a towing capacity at hook of 9,500 tons with a speed of 8 kilometres and without tow a speed of 18,0 knots. Dimensions were 46,0 (between perpendiculars)-48,4 (over all) x 9,0 (moulded) x 3,2 (depth amidships) x 2,2 (mean draught with full fuel load) metres. This was an stronger version of the BOR-450 for owing ships of the division 0 USSR register. The two steel made screws were fitted in propeller cowls. The four cycle solid injection non reserve diesel engines (for port and star board revolution) with reserve reducer transmission could be operated from the wheelhouse, captain’s bridge and in the engine room. Crew numbered 7 officers and 16 sailors. Able to serve in spring break up period in light ice due to the strengthened bow and overall strength of the hull. The three balanced rudders were electrically operated.
