Dutch minesweeper Hr.Ms. Jan van Gelder 1936-1961


Of the Jan van Amstel-class minesweepers although also to be used as minelayers. Laid down by Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands on 10 October 1936, launched on 27 March 1937, commissioned on 13 September 1937, decommissioned on 26 March 1943, handed over to the British Royal Navy, returned in March 1945, converted into a boom defence vessel in 1950, stricken 1961 was she handed over to the Zeekadetkorps Nederland and finally broken up. Displacement 460 tons and as dimensions 55,80 x 7,80 x 2,20 metres. Speed 15 knots with a horsepower of 1.600ihp supplied by 2 Stork triple expansion engines and 2 Yarrow 3-drum boilers. Armament consisted of 1-7,6cm gun, 4-12,7mm/0.50” machine guns and 40 sea mines. Crew numbered 45 men.
