American destroyer USS Jacob Jones lost according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 1 March 1942

An item reported that the old American destroyer USS Jacob Jones was torpedoed and sunk off Cape May, New Jersey. At that moment were 11 crew members landed.

1. DD-130. Part of Wickes-class “four-stack” destroyers preceded by Caldwell-class succeeded by Clemson-class, laid down by New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, USA on 21 February 1918, launched on 20 October 1918, commissioned on 20 October 1919, decommissioned on 24 June 1922, recommissioned on 1 May 1930 and torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-578 on 28 February 1942. Twelve man were saved, but one died underway home.
