Japanese naval shipbuilding for Thai acount in 1937-1938

A letter of the German naval attache in Japan dated Tokyo, Japan 19 January 1938 reported that since 21 December 1937 all ordered ships for Siam were delivered except for 2 submarines and 2 gunboats. Both submarines were expected to be completed in April and be delivered. Both gunboats were expected to be delivered at the same time as the submarines. Another two already delivered submarines were now exercising off Kobe.(2)

Notes

1. Kobe Shipyard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries built between 1936-1937 the coastal defence ships HTMS Thonburi and HTMS Sri Ayudhya preceded by Rattanakosindra class- gunboats with a displacement of 2,301 tonsand a main armament of 2x2-20.3cm/8” guns.

2. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built at Kobe between 1936-1968 the Matchanu-class submarines consisting of 4 unites with a displacement of 374.5 (surfaced)-430 (submerged) tons displacement named HTMS Matchanu, Wirun, Sinsamut and Phlai Chumphon.
