German cruiser Emden and Russian cruisers Askold reported to be destroyed in battle according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 8 August 1914

Russian Askold

An item referred to the British newspaper Daily Mail publishing a telegram from Tientsin and which reported that the Russian non armoured cruiser Askold (6.000 tons) and the German light cruiser Emden (3.650) sunk each other during a battle off Wei-hai-wei.(1)

Note

1. This item is nonsense. Both ships did not fight with each other although the Emden  destroyed later on 28 October in Penang the Russian cruiser Schemtschug. For more details dealing with the Askold see the link
