Russian former Dutch tugs underway from Schiedam towards Leningrad according to the Dutch newspaper Limburger Koerier dated 1 December 1939

Ann item reported that the Danish ferry Prins Christian received between Gjedser and Warnemünde a SOS from a Dutch ship probably the Dutch tug Beverwijk [20} which was recently sold to the Soviet Union.(1) Om board were 12 Dutch sailors. Two weeks earlier departed a transport from Schiedam towards Leningrad consisting of the tug Beverwijk 20, Ophir and l’Avenir and a 150-tons floating crane built by Gusto, Schiedam. At the time of the SOS was received was this transport indeed in that area while it passed some days earlier the Kieler kanaal. The Beverwijk 20 had a Russian captain and four Russian and twelve Dutch sailors on board, on board of the crane were four Dutch and on board of the other tugs were eight-nine Dutch sailors, the other sailors were Russian. The Dutch sailors were off Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Maassluis and Scheveningen. Another Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 7 December published an item reporting that the tug Beverwijk 20 sold to the Soviet Union towing a 150 tons floating crane by the shipyard Gusto v/h F.A. Smulders at Schiedam and the two tugs L’Avesnis and Ophir also sold to the Soviet Union arrived safely at Windau.

1. The newspaper Zaans volksblad dated 27 October 1939 reported that she measurement 750 tons and before she was sold to the Soviet Union was owned by the Dutch firm Hattem en Blankevoort of Beverwijk. The newspaper De Tijd dated 2 December reported that she was beached for some hours off Warnemünde but able to continue her voyage towards Leningrad. The Sumatra Post dated 17 January 1940 published a life story of this tug which was built at Enkhuizen in 1921. De Nederlandse koopvaardijvloot 1930 supplies the following details. She was indeed built at Enkhuizen namely at the shipyard Vooruit and now property of the Dutch firm Sleepboot Mij. “Beverwijk”  at Beverwijk. She measured 330 gross tons of 2,83 cubic metres-100 cubic feet and with the dimensions 116’9”x 26’5” x 12;10”(hold). Coal bunker capacity 180 tons of 1.016 kg. The engine supplied 400 ihp.
