Wreckage of German armoured cruiser Friedrich Carl found on Russian coast according to the Dutch newspaper Tilburgsche Courant dated 12 January 1915

An item dated The Hague 11 January reported that the Russian consulate there received a tiding that wreckage found on the Russian coast with no doubt proved that around a month ago a German cruiser was sunk in the Baltic Sea. This was supposed to be the armoured cruiser Friedrich Karl.(1)

1. The armoured cruiser Friedrich Carl was indeed lost in the Baltic Sea striking Russian mines off Memel on 17 November 1914. Her slowly sinking made the crew able to get sage from board with just seven casualties. She was laid down at the shipyard of Blohm&Voss, Hamburg in 1901 with yard number 155, launched on 21 June a year later and commissioned on 12 December 1903. The armament consisted of 2x2-21cm/8.3” guns, 10x1-15cm5.9” guns, 12x1-8,8cm/3.5” guns and finally 4-45cm/18” torpedo tubes.
