Germany intended to start herself whaling according to the Dutch newspaper De Gooi- en Eemlander dated 5 December 1935

An item reported that Germany intended to start in 1936 with the whaling and acquire in such manner the ingredients needed to produce margarine. The whale oil was until now bought from foreign whalers  In Germany were a 11.000 tons whale factory and 5 modern whale catchers being built. The annual consumption of Germany was around 200.000 ton. The intention was to supply in 1937 in the total need with German ships catching whales in the Greenland waters.
