Dutch parliament discussing value of Royal Netherlands Navy according to the Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 10 December 1908

In an item dealing with the discussions in the Second Chamber of the Dutch parliament around the navy budget was the editor quite clear. He reported that the parliament member Hugenholtz (1) which he called a former pastor, apparently being aggravated said that the Netherlands could not afford an annual budget of 4 million Dutch guilders. Submarines and torpedo boats were not needed. The minister had to guard his political and religious beliefs. However the lower staff needed in his opinion to earn more salary. Parliament member Duymaer van Twist (2) found it ridiculous that the navy supplied her sailors contraceptives against venereal diseases. The editor wrote that this member was always complaining! Further more was Duymaer supporter of founding an East Indies navy although he preferred the torpedo weapon and he wanted a department for defence. Parliament member Van Doorn (3) remarked that 33% of the navy personnel in the Dutch East Indies suffered from venereal diseases!
