Dutch bark Valparaiso destroyed by fire at Batavia, Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper Weekblad van Den Helder en het Nieuwediep dated 3 August 1857

An item dated Den Helder the 1st reported that on 2 June at 12.00 oclock a fire broke out in the aft hold of the Dutch bark ship Valparaiso captain Ellerman lying on the roads of Batavia, Dutch East Indies. The ship was partly loaded with coffee bales and it was suspected that this cargo fomented and caused the fire. Despite all efforts and the support of the Dutch warships Boreas, Medusa and Celebes and the merchant ship Walvisch did men not succeeded in extinguishing the fire. Just a part of the inventory was saved.
