Russian Black Sea fleet much weaker as commonly believed according to the Dutch newspaper Java-bode dated 4 March 1854

An item reported that the strength of the Russian naval force in the Black Sea was exaggerated. According to recent accurate tidings numbered this force with as naval base Sevastopol just 14 ships of the line and a number of frigates. To man this ships properly were with huge expenses sailors from the Baltic Fleet transported to the Black Sea. As a result was the Baltic Fleet disarmed. As ships of the line were sailing ships and with lacking the necessary number of tugs was the use of those ships regarded the continuous worse weather on the Black Sea hugely limited.(1)
