French China-expedition leaving Marseille, France according to the Dutch newspaper Nederlandsche staatscourant dated 13 December 1859

An item referred to a tiding dated Marseille, France 8th departed the day most of the ships fitted out for the China expedition but not able to go further caused by the worse weather. The effective strength of the expeditionary force was 8.031 men excluded the crews of the warships and transports. Not less than 2.600 officers asked permission to join the expedition.(1)
