Huge number of transports hired for the Crimean expedition according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder courant dated 2 May 1854

An item dated Paris, France 27th April reported that for the allied expedition towards the Crimean peninsula (1) were between 30 March until now 354 transports were hired of which 288 at Marseille, France and 66 at Genoa, Italy. Most of the ships were hired for four months so they were available. Until 19 April were almost 5.000 horses and mules transported towards Gallipoli.(2)
