Huge costs for British cabinet for hired transports for the Crimean expedition according to the Dutch newspaper Leydse courant dated 10 May 1854

An item dated London, England 4th reported that the British cabinet was forced to request again the  House of Commons to increase the budget for 1855. For the navy was another 4.553.731 pond sterling of which 1.457.031 for the fleet and the remaining for the expedition towards Turkey. For the monthly hired transports was 2.610.000 pond needed! The transport costs included horses and stores was 100 pond for each soldier. The costs were so high while the British government was forced to hire steamships from merchant companies lacking her own transports.
