British Admiralty ordered building of aircraft repair ship Unicorn according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1939 no. 10


An item reported that Royal British Navy ordered the building of the aircraft repair ship Unicorn at the shipyard Harland&Wolf, Belfast, England with as main task the maintenance of the engines of aircraft which was hardly possible to execute on board of aircraft carriers.

1.Maintenance aircraft carrier. Building costs 2.531.000 pound sterling. Building ordered on 14 April 1939, laid down with yard number 1031 on 26 June 1939, launched on 20 November 1941, completed on 12 March 1943, decommissioned January 1946, recommissioned mid 1949, never realized plans to modernize her in 1951-November 1952 to be started in July 1954, decommissioned on 17 November 1953, reserved since March 1957, to be disposed since 1958, sold to be broken up in June 1959 which was completed at Troon in 1960.
